sony rx1 review 2019

Another welcome surprise was how little noise the sensor produced when shooting at high ISO settings. I knew the full frame CMOS sensor would be good, but noise is pretty much a non-issue under 6400 ISO. Thanks Natanael. Are there anywhere any information about which lens (RX1 Sonnar or Sony 35 FE) in your comparison? The two exposure modes I use the most are Manual and Aperture Priority. This is my comprehensive review of the Sony RX1 – a full frame mirrorless camera with a fixed 35mm Zeiss Lens. Related: Amazon Prime Day 2019. Manual is my go to mode anytime I’m using the RX1 with an off camera flash. Thanks for an informative review and great sample images. The Sony Cyber-shot RX10 Mark IV is the best all-in-one camera you can buy, whether you’re a photographer or videographer. I certainly appreciate Phillip’s methodology but there are many “legendary” lenses he has tested that when analyzed with an eye towards flaws, look not so legendary. Hi Chad, Thanks for the review and the eye wateringly beautiful pictures. I am a photography enthusiast I have an A7RIII and I miss a 35mm and my doubte between the 35mm sony 1.8 and the sigma 35mm f1.2 i guess the bottom one. I’ve pre-ordered the new lens but ….I have some time to think about it I guess. I guess 24mm GM will be more useful if you use both APSC and FF. The RX1 series camera features Autofocus (AF) and Manual Focus (MF) modes, plus Sony's Direct Manual Focus (DMF). In crop mode, the 24mm bokeh will be more similar to an f/2 lens but retain the light gathering of an f/1.4. Both are biting sharp wide open but stop down to f/5.6 for crystalline perfection to the edges. How does the F1.8 compare to it’s older and much larger F1.4 sibling? The exposure mode dial has a dedicated panorama position. So wonder if the Sony FE 35mm 1.8 can basically give the same results? Most of the time I find myself using the RX1’s “flexible spot” focusing mode. Hello ! Hi, your reviews are amazing! Buy the Sony RX1 at Adorama (~$2,650 w/ instant rebate), Rent the Sony RX1 at Borrowlenses.com (~$150/week). I mainly shoot wedding and engagement photos, and like to take artsy and character pictures. I had even used it to take exposures over 100 seconds long. My 2c worth. ), an eye cap, a metal lens cap, a box of user manual in different languages, and of course the RX1R II. Let’s see Thanks again! You have to look close to see these differences but they are present. Been shooting that focal length for over 10 years now! This is huge, as the transition zone is what makes the Sonnar so special and what I was hoping to see in the FE 35mm. The more I shoot both side-by-side, the more I confidently can say that this is not true. Introduction TheSony Cybershot RX1 meets the definition of the wordunique. (below: A -1st shot, B -2nd shot) This has two distinct benefits over the mechanical shutters that DSLRs systems use – the first being that taking a picture with the RX1 is nearly silent. Could it have to do with the amount of saturation and contrast in the out of focus areas? Gio. Shooting events, I use “Multi” focusing mode with face detection and let the camera choose what to focus on. This isn’t a problem for the wider environmental portraits but I do notice it on tight head shots or 3/4 length portraits. Regardless, the camera produces images with true skin tones and plenty of detail. I grabbed some 1:1 crops here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/c99610e91noxmxg/AADKsmfoJtT-OZWcl-hWc19ca?dl=0. Thanks for your reply Chad. Both were at f/1.8 but note that I was closer to the subject with the FE (or maybe it was just the shorter distance to the front element) so the bottle is larger and the background bokeh would naturally render a bit smoother. I’ve been waiting a long time for a small mirrorless camera that can produce DSLR quality images. If you can only can keep one lens from 24mm 1.4 GM and 35 1.8 which one would you keep? It is a 24 Megapixel full-frame camera that comfortably fits in a coat pocket and which features an integrated 35mm f/2 silent leaf shutter Carl Zeiss lens. In a lot of ways the RX1 is now my workhorse camera. Also, the camera has a standard flash hotshoe so that external flashes or off-camera flash triggers can be used. I’m sure it’s a great lens. I just located very informative 5min video from Sony which shows how they assemble three devices – RX1 is in the top left corner. What a strange comment. DMF uses autofocusing to quickly focus on your subject, and then allows you to refine the focus point manually for precise adjustment. Considering that the average weight of Large Sensor Compact type cameras is 401g, Sony RX1 is a significantly heavy camera for its class. I’ve been waiting four years for it so it wouldn’t hurt to wait a while longer. What about the last image, it’s probably the only one I can see clear difference zoomed out, one seems to have larger bokeh so I’m assuming the top one is the 35 1.8 and the bottom is the RX1, but considering the RX1 is smoother I don’t know. I’ll add that the major difference between the lenses is the bokeh. It may be the same one in Lr. Review: The 2019 Sony RX0 Mark II, as a still photographer. It seems that according to your tests I will not. Now, I’m torn between getting this lens or Voigtlander 40mm f1.2 (which you have reviewed). And neither is the Sony RX1R II’s design. Here was a truly compact camera with an impressive 20.2-million-pixel, 1in (13.2×8.8mm) CMOS imaging sensor. Well, I originally thought you were correct but no, the RX1 shot is the top. Peter you can turn off the audio in Menu > Wrench Icon #3 > Audio Signals. This allows me to control the position of the focus cursor much like you can with a DSLR. This is further complicated by the fact that it’s also difficult to “zone focus” the the RX1 due to fact that the focus ring on the lens does not have markings or a defined span of rotation (it can be rotated in the same direction continually). A short question – does colorspace have any effect while shooting RAW? A fair assessment although I still think the new FE is sharper at comparable apertures but i don’t test bench lenses – Roger Circala over at the Lens Rental blog indicates that the FE is very sharp. However, because that focus ring has infinite rotation you can’t use the RX1 to easily “zone focus” that way that you can with other camera lenses. model with feather hat-2nd photo Also, you need to be conscious about keeping the focus plane of the lens parallel to the subject in order to avoid introducing wide angle distortion. Image comparisons aside, what really impressed me about the new FE 35mm compared to the Sonnar is the usability on the latest generation of a7/a9 bodies. I don’t use it for two reasons: 1) it can’t be used when shooting in RAW mode, and 2) I don’t really need it because the files already have a ton of dynamic range (easily pushed/pulled three stops of exposure during post-processing). Both the X100V and the RX1 are fixed lens compact cameras that are based on an APS-C (X100V) and a full frame (RX1) sensor. This EVF is the best I’ve ever used. I’ll post the key to which lens took each photo in a few days, in case others are interested in guessing. I only write about gear that satisfies me and I enjoy spreading the word. So when I heard about the release of the Sony RX1, which basically combines these 2 features, I was crazy excited. Patiently waiting to own it. I have my 35mm 1.4 for sale but a little hesitant to let it go. That’s a decision only you can make. When Sony released its Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 in June 2012, it caused a stir in the compact camera market. I’ve been shooting this camera non-stop for since February 2013 and have put it through a variety of situations including editorial assignments, portraits, street photography, landscapes, and even macro work. Since image noise levels were so low, I actually used the “auto” ISO setting quite a bit and let the camera pick the best ISO for each shot. It’s a Goldilocks lens. The RX1 does not have a continuous auto-focus mode which means that it can not track a moving subject like you can with a DSLR. In somewhat similar tone to “if it breaks…” – I would not buy it because the lens can not be removed. One person even stated that the Sonnar has some magical micro contrast not present in the FE lens. Would be nice if we all patiently stayed away from buying it for another year. Main reason is for swapping with this lens for its size (love the 35mm rendering but it’s just too big). On the surface it checks all the boxes: fast (f/1.8), compact (280g) and at a launch price of $748, cheaper than both the compact f/2.8 Sonnar ($798) and the SLR sized f/1.4 Distagon ($1598). Fujifilm X100V vs Sony RX1. ... September 1, 2019 at 3:29 pm. Whatever I ask of it, the RX1 generally delivers with stunning image quality thanks to its full frame CMOS sensor and Zeiss lens. If you only shoot the Distagon wide open and are addicted to that look, the FE will not be able to match it. View all of the recent photos I’ve been taking with the RX1. Don’t have one here to compare it with but based on my recollection of the 2.8, yes! Enter the newly released and long awaited Sony FE 35mm/f1.8. I guess I’m saying the sum is always greater than the parts – or something like that. I have the Samyang FE 35mm F2.8 and an adapted Carl Zeiss Distagon 35mm F2 ZS as my stop gap 35mm lenses. I am curious if I can see the difference in your comparison pictures. In the film era, you would start with a normal 50mm lens and then move to longer or wider focal lengths, eventually settling in on a preferred way of seeing. COMPARISON! Low light situations tend to be problematic for cameras of this size. I use my RX1 and RX1R II for many years professionally alongside my Nikon D800e and Z 7 and let me tell you – they are rugged. (Pocket-lint) - When it first launched at the end of 2012, the Sony Cyber-shot RX1 was a camera like no other. The only complaint I have with the Sonnar is that you can’t use it on Sony’s more popular and prevalent E-mount. I think I can tell which is which, thanks to your excellent review. Sitting pretty with a full frame 24MP sensor, a matched-perfect 35mm f/2 Zeiss Tsonar lens, it has the hallmarks of one too, and in addition to that, the lack of an optical low pass filter. Beautiful photos throughout, and great examples of what this lens can produce. Despite its compact size, this full-frame camera shoots photos that rival larger models. If my 5N stops working, then I will just buy a replacement for a few hundred euros. of Down Button Smart Telecon./Zoom MOVIE Button Exp.comp.set Bracket order Lens Comp. Simple: Buy BOTH! Required fields are marked *. Yes, the RX1 also shoots video. I’m in the exact same boat and love that 24mm. Very nice review especially your comparison with the Sonnar. Some cameras and sensors tend to produce a lot of noise and artifacts when exposure goes beyond a few seconds. This was a technique I used when I had an M6, way back in the days of film. Is this the compact and fast 35mm we’ve been waiting for? Relying on a camera service when you travel is not a realistic option: servicing a complex, difficult to disassemble camera requires very well trained service personnel, and takes time. Sharper than the 35 2.8 it seems, even wide open. This creates an “either or” situation where by you can either use an off camera flash trigger or the EVF but not both at the same time. However, I have to admit, the 35mm f/2 works great for 90% of the photos that I take. I think I’m going to trade but wanted to be sure that I wasn’t going to sacrifice any image quality. I did take one comparison image a few weeks ago and I threw them in a folder for you to access: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/7qmaq3mtnccr6xv/AABgu3HFrspoGGFwB9hpsvupa?dl=0. If you use a lot of speedlights and studio flashes this is a tremendous advantage because it allows you over power the sun in your exposures like I did here with Eric’s portrait. It marries the best of the classic definitive moment reportage concept found in the RX1 to the latest generation of Sony’s impressive autofocus systems in a significant evolutionary leap that is going to put a smile on a lot of faces. The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 is the first ever compact camera with a 35mm full-frame sensor. Keep up the good work! I wanted to see how much (or little) depth of field I could get in the macro mode. Hey Chad, thank you for that wonderful review and these beautiful images! See his 35 1.8 Review HERE.. There’s no doubt that the Sony RX100 … Of course, I would. The Cyber-shot RX1 R II is a demonstration of what Sony’s engineers are capable of. I am a happy owner of the RX1R II but your review made me thinking about giving it up for the A7R4 with this lens (bit larger size overall but still ok, and for small bag in sunny days there is the even smaller 35 f2.8). 35mm is a desert island lens – the one you would keep if you could have no other. The F1.4 has served me well for quite a few weddings and lots of events…..but now I find I’m using the 24mm F1.4 GM more and more instead. Out of focus transition – something the Sonnar excels at – looks to be similar if not identical in most of my comparison shots. Ive been using the lens for a couple of weeks now (after selling my 35/2.8) and don’t think there is any image quality benefit to the switch. Bottom line, if you want a small camera that produces DSLR quality images and provides a good deal of manual control, this is a fantastic camera. The closest competitor for the Sony RX1R II is the Leica Q, announced in 2015. Hi i am a fan of yur work thx for a good review. Would I love it if this camera had removable/changeable lenses? I appreciate A LOT. By default, the A7R III is set to correct for falloff and lateral color fingers, but distortion correction is OFF.Sony calls falloff “Shading.” Sony calls lateral chromatic aberration simply “Chromatic Aberration.””. The photos included below are RAW developed using Phase One’s Capture One with default noise reduction settings and various editing is done using Photoshop. I could even replace my Nikon birding gear when buying the 200-600 for the A7R4, and solve everything with 1 camera (need to see AF of A7R4 first for that). In reality servicing often introduces new problems. We've updated our Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 review with an additional page of lens data, brought to you in collaboration with DxOMark. The bad news is that the RX1 stumbled when trying to focus in low light/low contrast situations. Sorry, my previous reply was meant for Frank’s comment. but to toggle quickly from crop to full is very slow because when the camera is buffering changing the crop is not possible. I’m not alone, as there has been a loud chorus of voices calling for a similar lens that could be used on our a7 and a9 cameras. Hi Chad, thanks for the review…same problem here. Some people have commented on another forum that the FE is not nearly as good as the RX1’s Sonnar. Field Test by William Brawley Posted: 10/4/2013. In post-processing, I used higher noise reduction levels than usual, but as you can see, the detail was there. I was excited to see how the RX1’s 35mm f/2 lens would perform in portrait situations. Another area where the two lenses share DNA is sharpness. DMF mode allows for manual override of the auto focus by turning the focus ring on the lens. Thank you, Chad, for this great review and comparison. As for your question about the Distagon vs FE at the same aperture. Image Quality – The Cutting Edge. You would deny yourself ownership of this excellent camera because in your opinion, “If it breaks down in three or four years’ time it probably can’t be repaired”. on the shot with the olivegreen scooter, bokeh is much smoother on the top photo, especially the writing on the UPS truck. After a day or two, I was taking this camera everywhere because, unlike previous pocket cameras, I was no longer concerned about sacrificing image quality. While doing this, the RX1 takes a series of photos and then stitches them together into a 15 megapixel panorama. I appreciate your comments. Secondly, the desire of every photographer to have hardware that’s small and of good quality. And finally, thank you for excellent review! the only two things holding me to buy this, battery and EVF 1 hour killed 2 battery? It’s bright, very responsive, and displays nearly everything you can see on the rear LCD (including the live histogram). Unless …… the RX1R III (or IV) comes with the same 61MP sensor and better AF is the same small body…… That would make me keeping BIF set separate. Hah, always too many decisions. “My A7R Mark III corrects for any or all of falloff, distortion and lateral color fringes, any of which you may turn ON or OFF at MENU > CAMERA 1 > Lens Comp. Because this is a mirror-less camera, manual focus is only made possible by the RX1’s use of “focus peaking”, which displays a magnified view of your scene on the LCD screen as you make focus adjustments. In some pictures I see some difference, but I can’t confidently make out if you wanted to match FOV or if you used a tripod. Check at amazon.de. I’ve heard that the RX1 Sonnar is actually closer to a 33mm FOV, just as my Samyang 35mm 1.4 (I’ve owned the Samxang 35mm 2.8 too, and there actually is a 2mm difference I’d say). I often find myself using that lens stopped down to 1.7 or 2.0 (it somehow has no stop at 1.8), and the OOF parts are still deep enough to me/the rendering still very smooth. Just to clarify: it is a myth that dust gets inside only when you replace a lens, or that cameras with non removable lenses are dust proof. I shoot everywhere from ISO 50 to 6400, both handheld and on a tripod. Best, I use the Samyang FE 35mm 1.4 ony my first gen A7 and I’m very happy with everything about it, except for size and weight. I push this camera pretty hard, and will you show how it performs in a variety of photo situations. . In a perfect world, I would keep both but you are probably right to think that the FE 35/1.8 will get used much more due to its great performance and small size. I haven’t tried it yet but the other thing i like is the manual focus button on the lens – this will be great for “from the hip” street/candid shooting, where i can just set focus on 8 or 10ft and at f8 or 11, auto iso, and snap away. I’ve fooled with this voodoo once or twice. The RX1 is so small that it fits into a tiny shoulder bag or even a large coat pocket. The RX1 exudes build quality. I’ve been shooting this camera non-stop for since February 2013 and have put it through a variety of situations including editorial assignments, portraits, street photography, landscapes, and even macro work. My personal opinion on the Q is that it is a very good Sony RX1 copy, with two major advantages: mechanical focus and a built-in viewfinder. It was easy to produce significant lens “bokkeh” at f/2, while needing at least f/16 to get about an 1/2 inch of depth. : Shading Lens Comp. Chromatic aberrations look to be well controlled with the FE 35mm – maybe even more so than the Sonnar. If you’re geeky, read more on all this by reading around the topic of “UniWB”. Hi Frank. This should answers any questions one may have about repair costs or feasibility of sensor cleaning. If there is no easy way to remove the lens to clean the sensor you have only one option: post editing, and thus loosing some details when your software extrapolates pixels to the adjacent ones. There, problem solved! I have’t seen any eye AF issues. How would you rate the dynamic range compared to your Phase One back? Sony’s very first full frame digital mirrorless camera, the RX1 was built around this desert island concept because well, you couldn’t put any other lens on it – the Carl Zeiss Sonnar 35mm f/2 lens was literally bolted to the camera. Unlike a DSLR, the RX1 uses an in-lens leaf shutter system. This makes the RX1 an excellent choice for street photography or other documentary work where you do not want to draw attention to yourself. I would like to discuss something I think to see, but I’m not really sure of. Yes, if I could only have one, the 24mm GM would be the choice – I would use it as a 35mm in crop mode as needed. Firstly, serious curiosity about the shooting experience of a tiny waist-level device (the RX0 Mark II has a flip screen). I was curious how the RX1 would fare in poor lighting, and so I took it to one of my top five worst lighting situations: the local pub. Higher res, better AF, ibis, pixelshift highres. Good luck. That would help me a lot! Sony RX1 weighs 482 g (1.06 lb / 17.00 oz) and has external dimensions of 113 x 65 x 70 mm (4.45 x 2.56 x 2.76″). The RX1 produces 24 megapixel images that contain tons of detail as well as realistic color and tonality. April 15, 2013. For example in the last picture the greens (box) and yellows (traffic light) from the second picture seems more punchier and i find it interesting to know which lens that is. Thanks. ( Log Out /  On the a9 specifically, focus was virtually instant, and the camera’s ability to automatically track my subject or shoot wide open at f/1.8 at ultra-high electronic shutter speeds (1/12800sec) in bright daylight enabled images I could never capture with the RX1. We could get a more practical price. We could reset the market by not just accepting companies prices and make them more consumer friendly. The more I shot with this new lens, the more something nagged me, a sense of recognition…could it be that the FE 35mm was designed to match the performance of the beloved 35mm Sonnar on the RX1? Review: Shooting Street with the Sony RX1 by Danny Santos II. Pixel peeping tests might show a difference in the corners but my stopped down samples look fantastic. None of this is news to the Sony RX1 fans, though. (It really is a geeky area, though and, for most photographers, is just too much trouble for too little gain. Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment. Both the RX1 and the RX1R II are fixed lens compact cameras that are equipped with a full frame sensor. Would you say there’s still an obvious difference in the overall smoothness of the rendering when both lenses (35mm 1.4 & 35mm 1.8) are shot at the same f.stop? Please email me the details (I will keep them private). After 3 years of waiting, Sony finally announced the successor of the RX1 and RX1R – the RX1R II. But since I do a lot of pictures under low indoor ambient light, I could really use the faster 1.8 aperture. Why would this camera be any more likely to break down than other expensive cameras? Physically, the lens is well constructed in the same design language as the FE 85mm/f1.8, including a customizable function button on the barrel. My gut told me this was a lens similar in concept to the popular FE 85mm f/1.8 – a compact, fast focusing, very sharp lens with hopefully some great character. I love doing street scenes and portraits at opposite ends of the aperture scale to create completely different looks. Size and weight are nearly identical to the FE 55mm/f1.8. is sth. In some pictures the phenomena seems more apparent than the other. For the venues where I would need a tighter 35mm focal length the F1.8 would probably be a more sensible choice especially if the focussing is faster. In my country, the CV used costs almost the same as the Sony 35mm. I was thinking to get the 24mm and 35mm to have just the ability to don’t switch lens for occasional and fast work. I shoot the RX1 exclusively in RAW mode, which produces 25MB files that I then develop into TIFFs (~135MB) or JPGs using a RAW file processor like Phase One’s Capture One, Adobe Lightroom, or Adobe Camera RAW.
